PATTERNS

I have a photo/drawing/garment that I want to have made. Can you make a pattern?

Yes. We make flat patterns for any sewn item.

How do you make your patterns?

We operate the PAD digital pattern software. We have a large format (72 inch) plotter on site and are able to print your patterns or markers on 30 lb bond recycled plotting paper.

Why digital Patterns?

Manually drafted (tag paper) patterns are time consuming to make and alter.

Once your patterns are digital, styles can be
• changed quickly and efficiently
• altered into new styles easily
• printed out with precision over and over again
• transferred digitally to production facilities worldwide
• stored electronically or in the cloud for safekeeping

I have existing patterns but want to make changes to my item. Can you use my patterns?

Yes. Please bring them with you to your project intake meeting, and we can use them in estimating your project.

What do you mean when you say “true” my pattern?

When we receive your pattern, we compare all sewing lines to ensure that they match and will sew well. Our experience in working with multiple cut and sew facilities ensures that your pattern adheres to industry standards. We utilize any opportunity to streamline the production process for you.

I already have digital patterns, can you use them?

Yes, but we may need to have the files converted, depending on the source platform

What file extensions can you work with?

• .sty (generated by PAD)
• .zip (raw gerber file)
• .dxf ( This is a generic file extension used to communicate between platforms. For Example, an OptiTex .dsn or .pds file can be converted to a .dxf for import to our system.)

Please note: if you work with other file types, we can have them converted.

I need sizes of my pattern. Can you provide these?

Yes. We will work with your existing size grade OR work with you to create your size grade. We can apply it to your perfected sample size with CAD precision and provide you with your requested size range.

What should my sample size be?

This depends, but we usually recommend that you choose a medium size from your desired range. You are required to have a fit model for your sample size if you are making products that need to fit actual bodies. SPS does not provide fit models.

How do I determine my size range?

Market research is necessary to determine your size range. Who is your customer? We can consult with you on this topic if you need further information.

Why do I need a fit model?

Translating two dimensional flat patterns into three dimensional garments requires testing on actual bodies. This testing cannot be underestimated.

Can I have copies of my pattern?

Absolutely! We will have digital copies here, but encourage you to keep a digital copy on your premises for safekeeping. Anytime you need paper copies are happy to print them for you. Pricing depends on amount printed.

Why do you recommend that SPS Sew development samples?

Product development happens in stages. Patterns in all stages of development from first to final production pattern should be proven with a sewn sample. The sample sewing process provides the patternmaking process with a valuable feedback loop. With very rare exceptions, any all pattern change should be proven with a sewn sample.

My pattern has already been in production, why does SPS want to sew a sample?

Too often, we have seen production patterns that are not true. When the pattern is not true, there can be big problems with your production. This step can often coincide with a pre-production factory sample that will provide production pricing.

I already work with a seamstress/tailor/sample shop. Can I continue to work with them?

Yes, we can help you for as few or as many steps as you would like. We certainly recommend having SPS sew your development samples to minimize errors in translation, but we also understand and respect your existing relationships. We are conscientious in providing as much direction as possible to outside contractors. We cannot, however be responsible for the quality of another shop’s work. Any samples sewn by other contractors must be measured to spec at our shop before we make alterations to the pattern based on the sample.
